The Connection of it All: Doula Edition
Good doula work is inherently anti-oppressive.
Service Description
Doula work is an opportunity for political community work that decentralizes the nuclear family, creates space beyond hetero and mononormativity, meets people where they are, and loves people in customized ways. Birth, postpartum, lactation doulas, nannies/babysitters, chosen family, therapists, loved ones of birth givers, parents, and caregivers welcome! Good doula work is inherently anti-oppressive. This class meets for a one-day, three-hour discussion and a follow-up that will be scheduled according to attendees' availability once the course begins. (this accounts for a couple of breaks, time for folks to build community with attendees, and ask specific questions) We become doulas to give individualized care. The goal is for people to have both basic and nuanced understandings of the concepts like intersectionality, queerness, anti-racism, ableism, fatphobia and classism. This is a great space for the members of the village (doulas, tias and tios, chosen family, social workers, medical professionals) to join together, learn, build community with each other and grow in doing our work. We do this work because we believe people deserve care and we do this workshop to be able to do that in a way that fights and navigates systems of oppression with nuance, love, courage and an intersectional approach. Whether you’re new to this journey or not, this is for you. Because we live in a world where Black birth givers are dying 3 times more in birth than white birth givers. Because we live in a world where queer families lack resources, and are being actively attacked by legislators. Because systems of oppression like racism, ableism, homophobia, and classism are all connected. Because we cannot divorce people from their politicized identities if we want to serve them well. Because your clients deserve a doula that cares about the systems they live under and how they impact their lives, births, and children.
